JUNE 6 - JULY 19, 2014

OPENING RECEPTION
JUNE 6 FROM 6:00PM TO 8:00PM

"I'm looking for perfection in form. I do that with portraits. I do it with flowers. It's not different from one subject to the next. I am trying to capture what could be sculpture."
-Robert Mapplethorpe, Perfection in Form (teNeues, 2009).

Weinstein Gallery, with the gracious assistance of The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, is pleased to present Robert Mapplethorpe. This will be the first solo show of Mapplethorpe's work in Minneapolis in four years.

Perhaps one of the most famous and controversial artists to emerge from the late 1970s and 1980s, Robert Mapplethorpe died in 1989 at the age of forty-three. This exhibition will present 25 photographs taken between 1978 and 1989, focusing on two major subjects of his oeuvre, human and botanical forms. In these photographs, which exemplify classical ideals of form and proportion, Mapplethorpe used light and shadow, form and formlessness, symmetry and asymmetry to capture perfection and beauty.

It is nearly impossible to overestimate the impact of Robert Mapplethorpe's work, both artistically and socially. He is unquestionably considered one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century, and his work has been the subject of numerous retrospectives and books. His photographs are exhibited and collected worldwide, most recently in concurrent exhibitions at the Musee Rodin (Mapplethorpe-Rodin, April 8 - September 21, 2014) and the Grand Palais (Robert Mapplethorpe, March 26 - July 13, 2014).

The works presented in this exhibition have been made available by the Mapplethorpe Foundation.
